ChatGPT Ads Now Pull Customer Data From Your Website Forms by Default
OpenAI told advertisers by email that automatic advanced matching would switch on for every existing ad pixel on August 17. That date has passed. Unless someone opted out, it's running now.
Sometime this past week, OpenAI sent advertisers an email about ChatGPT Ads Manager updates. Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable published its contents, and buried seventh in a list of product notes is the one with a deadline attached. OpenAI’s own words:
“AAM is now the default for new Web pixels, and on August 17, 2026, OpenAI will also enable it for existing Web pixels. AAM helps match more conversions to ads using hashed customer information from website forms. If you prefer not to have AAM enabled, you can opt out before August 17 by going to Tools, Conversions, Data Source, then Edit pixel.”
AAM is automatic advanced matching. In plain terms: the ChatGPT ad pixel on your site will start reading what customers type into your forms, things like email addresses and phone numbers, scramble them into anonymized codes (that’s the “hashed” part), and send them to OpenAI so it can credit more sales to your ads.
The default just flipped. Until now this was a feature you turned on. On August 17 it becomes a feature you have to turn off, on every pixel already running.
Silent defaults on customer data are how ad platforms grow up. MarTech’s read on this update cycle is that it exists to bridge the gap with Google Ads and Meta Ads, and form-based matching is a page straight from that older playbook. If your forms collect anything you wouldn’t want in an ad platform’s matching system, health inquiries, financial details, a patient intake field, the opt-out clicks are: Tools, Conversions, Data Source, Edit pixel. Before August 17.
Why does OpenAI want form data this badly? Match rates. Jon Loomer, who runs the ads-education practice Jon Loomer Digital and has been testing ChatGPT’s audience tools since they launched, spotted the platform’s weakness back in July, writing about its customer list uploads:
“OpenAI is matching a single data point to users, and a ChatGPT account wouldn’t be as ubiquitous as a Facebook account.”
He concluded “the match rate is going to be low.” Form data fixes exactly that problem. Every email a customer types into your checkout is a fresh identity signal OpenAI can match against its accounts, which makes your conversion numbers look better and its ad platform look smarter. You supply the data; both of you get credit.
The same email shows how fast the rest of the platform is maturing. Conversion-optimized bidding is now in beta for product feed campaigns. URL tracking macros, Triple Whale and Hightouch integrations, and pixel diagnostics all landed at once. A multi-product carousel format is live, and Brazil and Mexico open in the coming week. It follows the same pattern as OpenAI turning daily budgets into seven-day averages days earlier, and it all points the same direction: ChatGPT Ads is being rebuilt to the big platforms’ spec, faster than most teams’ governance can keep up. The forecasts saying this becomes a $100 billion ad business assume exactly this playbook.
The consequence for a small team is concrete. Whoever set up your ChatGPT ad pixel, possibly a contractor, possibly someone who left, is the only person who’d ever see this email. There is no in-product consent screen for your customers and no signature required from you. The change arrives by email, on a 10-day clock, during summer vacation season.
Three things to do before August 17. Find out if you’re running the ChatGPT pixel at all; if a test campaign from spring left it installed, this applies to you. Decide deliberately whether hashed form matching is acceptable for your business, and if you’re in a regulated category, ask a lawyer, not a media buyer. And put someone’s name on “reads platform emails” as a standing job, because this is the second default OpenAI has flipped by email in a month, and there will be a third.
